Laurens van der Post (1906--1996), born in South Africa, served as officer in the British army in World War II, during which he spent more than three years in a Japanese prison camp. After the war he undertook many expeditions to various parts of Africa. His journey into the Kalahari in search of the Bushmen formed the basis of his famous books The Lost World of the Kalahari and The Heart of the Hunter. He was a close friend of Carl Gustav Jung who was the central figure both of a television series he made
