A McGraw-Hill Text Film, this film was made in correlation with Elizabeth B. Hurlock, PhD’s book “Child Development” (1942) and explains the impact family dynamics and sibling relations have on shaping the personalities and demeanors of individuals later in life. Produced by Crawley Films, this black-and-white film takes place at a garden party where a group of teenagers are in attendance before showing smaller vignettes that highlight the stories and family dynamics of the individual guests. Sisters Sally and Lillian - sally looks on jealously while eating a hot dog at Lilian who is speaking with a boy (9:15). Sally and Lillian in their shared bedroom - Lillian’s side is minimalist, neat, pristine; Sally’s side is messy, covered in clothes (9:38). Jeff, another teen guest at party, passionately plays harmonica (11:26). Jeff’s younger brother Ken plays violin with music stand at home in front of crystal case, Jeff looks on while eating apple (11:44). Jeff sits on piano bench and plays flute while Ken sits and eats apple (12:31). Sue’s younger sister sits in bed reading, wearing white linen nightgown, doted on by their mother (14:00). Sue looks on jealousy from vanity as she brushes her 1940s short bob in mirror (14:32). Back at garden party - Sue playfully grabs the hand of one of the boys and they begin to dance (15:16). Paula sits solemnly alone in a corner of the garden (15:47). Paula sits on mid-century modern style sofa in living room while younger brother rushes in and changes the TV program she was watching (15:53). Paula and her mother prepare snacks for father and brother in kitchen (16:59). Sonia smiles and greets a friend from chair in the garden (17:41). Sonia strolls with family on river bank for family picnic, small iron bridge in background (17:47). Sonia’s father plays hide-and-go-seek with little sister among trees (18:24). Family sits on shaded picnic blanket while younger sister runs and does cartwheels in grass (18:48). Arthur fidgets with fingers while standing under willow tree, looks out into the party (19:13). Arthur and parents sit at outdoor dining table while grandmother pours iced tea (19:26). Party guests do coordinated line dance, boys and girls hold onto each other’s waists as they make their way around the garden (20:48).
