The Battle of Monte Cassino was one of the longest and bloodiest battles of World War II. It was fought by the Allies (primarily British, American, and Polish troops) against German forces. The battle of Monte Cassino was fought for control of the Monastery of Monte Cassino, a strategically important location in the hills south of Rome. The battle of Monte Cassino was notable for the heavy casualties suffered by both sides, with the Allies ultimately achieving victory after several costly attempts to take the monastery.
