Philosopher Peter Singer started the animal rights movement with his 1975 book “Animal Liberation.“ Speciesism is the belief that humans are superior to non-human animals, and Singer calls this into question. Animals are smart, feel pain, and have the ability to express compassion just like us, yet humans have a long history of animal exploitation that needs to be addressed.
Throughout history, humans and animals have had a relationship that continues to evolve. Ancient humans hunted animals for food, but made use of every part of the animal. In the 1960s, factory farming was introduced - but at what cost? We once depended on horses for transportation until the Model T was introduced, which marks an evolution in our relationship with animals. Now that plant-based protein is so readily available, why are we still exploiting animals for food?
