La Palma volcano: Lava consumes more homes as new vent threatens new areas of island

Lava consumed more homes on Tuesday as the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on La Palma continued into its 10th week. A new vent in the volcano opened overnight, and scientists are warning the new lava stream could reach previously unaffected areas of the island. Since beginning its eruption Sept. 19, the volcano has destroyed or damaged nearly 2,700 buildings, forcing the evacuations of thousands of people. The lava has covered about 1,115 hectares of land so far, according to officials on Monday.
