Moroccan Lantern Mosaic Crochet Tutorial - Overlay Crochet work Flat or In The Round
This tutorial is done in the Overlay Mosaic Crochet Technique. In this tutorial I will teach you how to crochet this eye catching Mosaic Crochet design. Project ideas, yarn, hook and more info can be found below.
This pattern is worked in a MULTIPLE of 36 22. IN THE ROUND chain ONLY the multiple of 36 and slip stitch to form a ring, begin working the repeat in that same stitch.
TO REPEAT THE DESIGN FOR LARGER PROJECTS YOU WILL WORK ROWS 1 THRU 32 AND THEN WORK ROWS 3 THRU 32 AS MANY TIMES AS YOU WOULD LIKE FOR THE PROJECT YOU CHOOSE.
The CHART for this is in my Etsy shop which you can find here:

New to Mosaic Crochet:
PROJECT IDEAS FOR WORKING FLAT - Suggested starting chains for various projects - counts include 22 at end:
Baby blanket: 130 chains depending on yarn size used (3 repeats wide)
Place mats: 58 chains (1 repeat of design on row, size shown in video)
Table Runner: 58 chains for total width of table runner, you will then work the repeats to obtain the total length for your table. (1.5 repeat wide row, size shown in video)
Throw blanket : 166 chains (4 repeats wide)
Tote or Throw Pillow: 58 chains depending on yarn size used and desired size, create 2 and seam together (1 repeat of the design, shown in the video)
Scarf: 58 chains depending on yarn size used, this will be desired width, you will repeat the pattern until desired length is achieved. I recommend size 3 light weight yarn or smaller for scarves, shawls, wraps. If you want to work your total length first you will work 310 starting chains (8 repeats of design)
Large Shawl/Wrap: 346 chains (working by chaining total LENGTH and then you will repeat design until total width is achieved) I recommend size 3/DK yarn and hook.
IN THE ROUND- Slip stitch to first chain and you must work into that first stitch following the repeat given in the video IN THE ROUND IS WORKED IN THE MULTIPLE OF 36 ONLY, YOU DO NOT ADD 22 STITCHES TO CHAIN COUNT:
Makeup or Notions bag/ Clutch: 72 chains
Throw Pillow: 20“ to 24“ depending on yarn size used, tension and hook: chain 108
Large Bag/Tote/Pillow: 144 chains for large tote/bag
HOOK SIZE: G in this tutorial, this is a Nelsonwood Hook,
I recommend using the below hook sizes depending on yarn used:
3 DK yarn : to
Size 4 Medium/worsted weight: to 5mm.
Mixing 3 & 4 weight: to
THE YARN: I’m using size 3 & 4 weight yarn, any brand will work as well as any size.
In the video my color A is Stylecraft Special DK in Bluebell and Color B is Red Heart Super Saver Stripes in Cool Stripe with a hook
Sample in Neon Pink: COLOR A: Cygnet Pato Everyday in Neon Pink or Style Craft Special Double Knit in Fiesta COLOR B: Yarn Been Sugarwheel in Parisian Macaroon with a hook
Sample in Pinks/Gold: Lion Brand Wool Ease DK Color A: Forever Young; COLOR B: Bedazzled with a mm hook
Note on mixing yarn sizes 3 (DK) & Size 4 (Medium Worsted weight): THE TRICK TO MIXING YARN SIZES IS JUST KEEPING YOUR TENSION EVEN AND USING THE SMALLEST SIZE HOOK RECOMMENDED FOR THE SMALLER YARN!
Project info and starting:
To begin your project you will chain in multiples of 36 plus 22 at the end to work a flat piece. You will skip the first chain and begin working in the second chain from the hook, ending up with an odd number of stitches. EXAMPLE: I chained 58 and had 57 stitches at the end of my first Row.
TO WORK IN THE ROUND: chain in multiples of 36 and slip stitch to the first chain. begin working the repeat in the first stitch [same stitch you slip stitches into) and follow the Repeat as given in the video.
