President Joe Biden on Saturday commented that the U.S. did not “support independence“ as he was asked about the outcome of the election in Taiwan. Lai Ching-te, Taiwan’s president-elect, emerged victorious in elections on the island of 23 million people that China claims as its own. He has vowed to safeguard the island’s de-facto independence from China and further align it with other democracies. Many countries, including the U.S., formally recognize the People’s Republic of China but maintain unofficial ties with Taiwan. Biden spoke as he left the White House to spend the weekend at Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland. He was also asked whether the U.S. had reached out to Iran about the latest U.S. military strike against Houthi-controlled positions in Yemen. “We’ve delivered it privately and we’re confident we’re okay,“ he told reporters. The U.S. military early Saturday struck another Houthi-controlled site in Yemen that it had determined was putting commercial vessels in the Red Sea at risk.
