Alto Practice: “Stabat Mater Dolorosa”, from 1st movement of “Stabat Mater” by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi. “Stabat Mater” hymn is based upon the “Dolorosa” poem which depicts the suffering of Mary , Christ’s mother, during his crucifixion. The work is divided into twelve movements, each named after the incipit of the text. Pergolesi composed the work for solo soprano and alto voices during the last few months of his tragically short life at the age of 26. Jean-Jacques Rousseau wrote: “The first movement of the Stabat Mater is the most perfect and most moving that has ever issued from the pen of any composer.”
