Gerry Buckley, Dewey Bunnell and Dan Peek met at London’s Central High School where the students were primarily children of military families. The three were sons of American military officials based in London. They were all interested in music and Gerry had already learned to play piano and bass in school bands. The three worked odd jobs and they decided to form a group called Daze, adding two other students so they could practice between work shifts. All three got their diplomas in 1969 and Dan left the group for a year while he attended college. The two other students left the band and Buckley, Bunnell and Peek rethought their situation and formed an acoustic band. One of their demos reached concert promoter Jeff Dexter who booked the band to open for Pink Floyd. Choosing “America“ as their new name, it held significance since that was their own country, even though they had not been there in years.
