Deep-sea squid bioluminescence

This remarkable squid (Abralia veranyi) uses bioluminescence to hide from predators. It produces light from its belly that perfectly matches the color and intensity of down welling sunlight in the ocean in order to hide its silhouette. This innovative trick, called counterillumination, is used by many fish, squid and shrimp, to hide in a place where there are no hiding places.
