Why did Russian Soldiers Install Paper Tubes and Pink Stripes on AK

In some pictures of Russian soldiers taken during the Chechen war, you can see two strange things on their AKs. Their AK-74 and AKM stocks are wrapped in a strange pink band, and there are strange tubes on the barrels that are half-cardboard and half-metal. Why do Russian soldiers do this?
