On This Day: 24 July 1979 – The Queen and Prince Philip On Royal Tour of Southeast Africa
On this day in 1979, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, accompanied by their son Prince Andrew, were welcomed to Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi, as part of a royal tour of Southeast Africa.
The royals also visited Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Tanzania, where her Majesty met with President Julius Nyerere.
During the tour, the monarch also opened the Commonwealth Conference in Lusaka, Zambia.
The royal visit went ahead despite the risk posed by guerrillas.
