Aston Villa of England will play Fiorentina of Italy in the championship match of the inaugural Gotham Cup tonight at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. Villa advanced by defeating Ajax of the Netherlands in a shootout after the teams had played to a 2-2 tie on Friday; Fiorentina advanced by defeating Panathinaikos of Greece, 3-0, in the second game of the doubleheader. Ajax meets Panathinaikos in the consolation match this afternoon. The Gotham Cup is a tune-up for the four teams, who begin play in their respective European leagues three weeks from now.
