Raag Yaman

A large part of Indian classical music involves improvisation by exploring the raag, or melodic scale. Here we present Maa Anugraha, one of Isha Samskriti’s senior Hindustani music students, exploring raag Yaman through an improvisation technique known as “taan.“ Taan is the weaving of notes together in a fast tempo. This is done completely on the spot, and is not pre-composed. Raag Yaman is traditionally sung in the early evenings, and conveys a mood that is calm and peaceful, while at the same time full of life.
