NASA APOLLO PROGRAM SPACE SUIT MOBILITY TESTS W/ WEIGHT OFFSETTING GANTRY XD47574

Want to support this channel and help us preserve old films? Visit Visit our website Dating to the early Apollo Program era, this silent film shows mobility tests conducted with a subject in a pressure suit. It’s not clear which space suit design is shown; although it appears similar to those used in Project Mercury, it could also be a similar, modified version of the Goodrich U.S. Navy Mark IV high altitude jet aircraft pressure suit. A plastic adapter surrounds the middle of the suit, allowing the astronaut to be strapped into a weighted support gantry that can help simulate weightlessness. The tests shown, which must have been grueling for the subject due to body position, included use of tools and a simulated repair. At 5:37, footholds are shown which could have been used in a zero gravity environment. At 6:22, the “astronaut“ plugs in a cable to the simulated spacecraft. At 10:25, the subject is shown on a harness, attempting to perform another simulated repair or task, which involves using a socket wrench (which is on a rope). At 21:16, a wider shot of actions shown at the start of the film, with the subject standing vertically.
