適当 Is Not Always “Appropriate“

てきとう (適当) is often introduced as “appropriate“ or “suitable“. However, that’s not how this word is commonly used in everyday language. When you look up this word in a dictionary, you’ll find a list of definitions, some of which seem to contradict each other: appropriate, sloppy, proper, irresponsible...
