Liberating the town of Maryinka in the DPR represents a major moral victory for the Russian forces, Scott Ritter, a former US Marine Corps intelligence officer and UN weapons inspector, told Sputnik. He also called Maryinka’s liberation “part of the concerted effort being undertaken by the Russian military to create a situation for the civilians of Donetsk, where they can live in peace without the fear of the daily bombardment that has killed so many innocent civilians, including children.” On Monday, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced that Russian troops had fully freed Maryinka, something that he stressed reduces the defense capabilities of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and gives Russia additional opportunities for further actions.
