Like most birds of paradise, this one is renowned for its dramatic colouring and mating displays. The male perches on a bare stump high in the canopy - and shows off his bright throat plumage, with the aim of attracting a partner. Once a female shows interest, he dances - clapping his wings for added effect. The female isn’t yet convinced he’s the one. But the show must go on. He continues to perform in case another female should pass by. His original love interest returns for a second look. But, she’s now certain, he’s not the one for her. Studies reveal that female riflebirds are exceptionally fussy. When choosing a mate, there’s no set criteria, it all comes down to personal choice. Next door, it’s rehearsal time for a pair of juvenile males. They won’t develop their vibrant adult plumage for four years - and only then can they join the dating game. For now they practice their dance moves on their siblings. While one youngster plays the role of the broody male, the other poses as the interested female.
