Gardiner railway/tramway level crossing 17/2/14

The Burke Road level crossing at Gardiner on the Glen Waverley line is one of only four places in Melbourne where a railway crosses a tramway at grade. Known as a ’tramway square,’ trains have to slow to 15km/h as they rattle through the crossing. The crossing is manually controlled from an interlocked signal box, which in addition to operating the gates and signals also changes the overhead voltage between 1500v DC for trains and 600v DC for trams.
