Beautiful homes for beautiful people Ep 5 - Resplendent Revival, the Dancing House by Ritu Beri

Architecture is the vehicle upon which civilisation travels. It is a legacy in bricks and mortar. If you look closely at beautiful building, you see more than good design. You see the combined effort of architects, engineers, masons, carpenters, painters and the labourers. All coming together for the single purpose of manifesting an idea that once existed in someone’s mind. In the heart of Nacionola in north Goa, nestled amidst lush greenery and exuding a timeless elegance, stands a remarkable colonial villa that has been meticulously restored to its former glory. This architectural gem, which seamlessly combines historical grandeur with modern comforts, serves as a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of a bygone era. With its captivating presence and rich heritage, the restored villa stands as a living testament to the architectural legacy of Goas yesteryears. Historical Significance: Built during the Portuguese era, the villa holds a significant place in the village history. It was originally constructed as a residence for a prominent Goan family, serving as a symbol of wealth and power in the region. Over the years, the villa witnessed the ebb and flow of time, silently standing witness to the changing landscape around it. The Restoration Process: The restoration of this magnificent colonial villa was a labour of love, spearheaded by Ritu Beri and carried out by a team of skilled architects and conservationists who meticulously researched and analysed the original architectural plans and historical records. The project aimed not only to restore the villa to its former glory but also to honour its heritage and preserve its architectural integrity. Preserving Architectural Elements: Every effort was made to maintain the authenticity of the villa’s original design. Intricate ornamental carvings, decorative cornices, and intricate tiled roofing was carefully restored, showcasing the exquisite craftsmanship of the colonial period. The villa’s distinctive colonial-style façade, featuring elegant columns and symmetrical proportions, was meticulously preserved, further enhancing its regal charm. Reviving the Interior Splendour: The interior spaces of the villa were lovingly revived to capture the essence of colonial aesthetics while accommodating modern-day comforts. High ceilings adorned with elaborate mouldings and woodwork create an airy and spacious atmosphere. Large, arched windows were restored to their former glory, flooding the rooms with natural light, offering picturesque views of the surrounding landscape. The original stone tiled flooring, with its rich patina, was expertly refurbished, adding warmth and character to the living spaces. Intricately carved wooden doors and elegant staircase balustrades were carefully restored, acting as a visual bridge between the past and present. Modern Amenities and Sustainability: While honouring the villa’s colonial heritage, modern amenities and sustainable features were seamlessly integrated into the restoration. State-of-the-art HVAC systems were discreetly incorporated to ensure optimal comfort, while energy-efficient pool filtration systems and roof insulation were installed to minimise the villa’s environmental footprint. Careful attention was paid to preserving the villa’s historical authenticity while offering residents a contemporary lifestyle. The designers have also restored the century old water well using laterite stone which now services the home and the pools water needs. Gardens and Outdoor Spaces: The villa’s grounds were meticulously landscaped to accentuate its colonial charm. Serene gardens adorned with manicured lawns, vibrant flower beds, and mature trees offer a tranquil retreat reminiscent of the villa’s past splendour. Outdoor seating areas, verandas, and a restored colonial-style gazebos provide perfect spots for residents to relax and immerse themselves in the villa’s enchanting ambiance. On a personal note: Preserving heritage, Inspiring the Future: It is very difficult for any government to legislate conservation. Particularly in the Goan real estate context. Therefore, I believe it is up to the wealthy Indians who have the wherewithal to buy and build homes in Goa to build with a sensitivity to our rich heritage. I think this restored colonial villa serves as a testament to the dedication and vision of Ritu and the architects and conservationists involved in its revival. For this I am grateful, as a Goan and a lover of beautiful homes. Do you want to feature your home or project with Rishad D’Cruz?
