Live from outside Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa as worshippers gather on morning after ceasefire announced

Ruptly is live from outside Al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem on Friday, May 21, as worshippers gather for Friday prayers on the morning after a ceasefire was announced between Hamas and Israel. Tensions between Israelis and Palestinians began to spiral over the planned eviction of Palestinian families from East Jerusalem’s Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood, as well as repeated clashes between worshippers and Israeli police at the al-Aqsa compound, known to Jews as the Temple Mount, during Ramadan. Subsequent hostilities, including rockets fired from Gaza, has left 12 civilians dead in Israel, including two children, while a campaign of Israeli air strikes and bombardments has killed 230 people, including 65 children. A ceasefire was announced on Thursday after 11 days of violence.
