EU Diplomat Held In Iran For Over 500 Days On Espionage Charges, Sweden Kept Arrest Under Wraps?

A Swedish citizen working for the EU diplomatic corps has been imprisoned in Iran for over 500 days, as per a report. Johan Floderus, who works for the European External Action Service, was detained at Tehran’s airport in April 2022. As per the New York Times, the Swedish EU diplomat was on his way home from a vacation in Iran when he was arrested more than a year ago. He had previously visited the country in an official capacity as part of his work for the EU without any problem, the newspaper said. Floderus, who was charged with espionage, is reportedly being held in the notorious Evin prison in Tehran ever since. In July 2022, the Iranian govt released a statement announcing that it had apprehended a Swedish national for espionage. The Iranian statement announcing his arrest reportedly cited Floderus’s previous visits to Iran as evidence of nefarious activity. #europe #iran #tehran #eu #worldnews #JohanFloderus n18oc_world n18oc_crux 0:00 INTRODUCTION 1:22 WHY DID IRAN ARREST FLODERUS? 2:00 EU DIPLOMAT’S ARREST KEPT A SECRET? 5:27 IRAN’S “HOSTAGE DIPLOMACY”?
