Cypress Hill - Shoot ’Em Up - 1992 MCA - Juice Soundtrack - Cypress Hill Weekend @thedailybeatdrop

Cypress Hill have tracks on a fair few cinematic projects, this being one of the first they would bless. Starring 2Pac, the “Juice“ soundtrack had a lot of great tracks, including this banger courtesy of Muggs: “Shoot ’Em Up“. Cypress Hill Links: @cypresshill/featured We have a stack of early Cypress Hill vinyl being uploaded to the DBD archive this weekend. Let us know if there are any tracks you would like to see included. It’s clear that Cypress Hill are both students of Hip-Hop and innovators within the culture. When they slowly appeared on the scene in the late ’80s/early ’90s, you could tell this crew were going to have huge appeal across a lot of genres. In many ways they were a mirror-image of EPMD - a duo that flowed together incredibly well, over some very funky beats provided by DJ Muggs. But within these funky West Coast soundscapes were hints of the East Coast, dirt, grime, and metal elements. They weren’t clean like the P-Funk. On wax B-Real and Sen Dog brought Spanish elements, and an air of homies that were chill but would throw down if you stepped to them. Their first album is littered with neighbourhood capers and wrong turns. And that’s without their huge contribution to making the leaf mainstream and promoting it cultivation/distribution as an accepted part of every day life. The artwork on their releases also had a sinister gothic edge from the beginning, the cover to “Kill A Man“ showing shady figures drenched in red and lit by candles. They would play on this and develop it on later releases. One of the beautiful things about the interplay between B-Real and Sen Dog is that it evokes the same kind of chemistry that would be seen in other successful Hip-Hop duos and groups: the bassy voice and nasal tones balanced out in Chuck D and Flava Flav, the swing between flows of Nice and Smooth, the back-and-forth of the Beasties. B-Real in particular always reminds me of what made “Beat-Bop“ such an incredible record, both in terms of style and content. Cypress Hill as a group are steeped in and have played a major part in Hip-Hop’s history. The uploads this weekend will celebrate the early Cypress releases, stretching into the early 2000s.
