What Would Happen if King Charles Abdicated?

Following the sad news of his cancer diagnosis, King Charles has shown no wish to relinquish his role or responsibilities as monarch. But in theory, what would happen if the King chose to abdicate the throne? Firstly the King would need to issue a formal statement declaring his intention to step down as monarch and give up his authority as the head of state. The UK parliament would then need to pass an ‘Act of Abdication’. This legislation would need to be passed by the House of Commons and the House of Lords. Once the the King successfully abdicated, he could pass the throne to the next person in the line of succession. As things stand, that would mean Prince William would become king, while Prince George would assume a new role as Prince of Wales.
