Bizarre and surreal figurative, Jonas Burgert.

Berlin-based German contemporary artist Jonas Burgert creates macabre portraits and figurative scenes featuring a cast of mysterious and grotesque human figures. The figures’ ghoulish antecedents can be found in the work of Flemish and Renaissance artists. Born in Berlin in1969, Burgert studied at the Berlin University of the Arts, graduating in 1996. The following year he studied under established painter and professor Dieter Hacker. Since 1998, Burgert has been presenting distinctly bizarre and surreal figurative scenes in an effort to examine the absurdities of the human condition. Jonas Burgert paints a stage every time that he lifts his brush: with every stroke, with every composition. His works depict the inexhaustible theatre play that Burgert considers to be human existence: man’s need to make sense of his purpose in life.
