Girl Lifesavers Parade (1953)

Maroubra, Australia. Excerpt from commentary - girls from metropolitan and country surf clubs hold their 1st carnival at Maroubra, usually 5,000 attend mens surf carnivals but today 8,000 are here. There are 300 girls (women) in the march past. They don’t only look decorative either! They can save lives - and what a pleasure for a drowning man. CU. Contestants. LS. GV. Lifesavers marching along beach. MS. The Manly contingent marching past. LS. GV. March past. (Comb. F.G.) Note: it is a good example of (apparently) unconsciously patronising pre feminist commentary.
