Dutch Farmers Defy Media Silence and Stage Massive Protests Against Environmental Regulations
Thousands of Dutch farmers drove their tractors to The Hague to protest against the government’s plans to limit nitrogen emissions, a policy they say will threaten their livelihoods and food production. The farmers, who have been protesting since 2019, accused the government of imposing unfair and ineffective measures to reduce pollution from livestock and fertilizers, which have led to high levels of nitrogen oxide and ammonia in the soil and water.
The farmers also complain of a lack of respect and recognition from the public, the media, and the politicians, who they say are ignoring their concerns and interests.
The protest was largely ignored by the mainstream media, which focused instead on a smaller demonstration by environmental activists who blocked a major road in The Hague to demand an end to fossil fuel subsidies. The farmers’ protest was one of the largest in the country’s history, involving more than 10,000 tractors and causing massive traffic disruptions.
