Libya/Egypt - Gaddafi Addresses Palestinians

(5 Oct 1995) T/I 11:25:52 GS 10:27:50 The Libyan leader, Colonel Gaddafi, on Wednesday (4/10) went to Libya’s border with Egypt to speak to refugees -- including many Palestinians -- who are camped there. Addressing a crowd of some 3,000 people, including the Palestinians, Gaddafi offered to camp out with them and promised to build them homes there if no other Arab countries would accept them. Egypt is refusing to allow these refugees to enter Egypt unless they have permits for Gaza or visas for other countries. Gaddafi called on Egyptian President Mubarak to let the displaced Palestinians travel to the Palestinian self-rule areas in Gaza Strip and Jericho via Egyptian territory. The Palestinian refugees, however, were unhappy with Gaddafi’s speech. Some of them began a demonstration, burning tyres and blocking the road out of the camp.
