Giorgia Meloni set to become Italy’s next PM: Italians offer mixed reaction

Giorgia Meloni is set to become Italy’s first woman prime minister at the head of its most right-wing government since World War Two after leading a conservative alliance to triumph at Sunday’s general election. Meloni, head of the nationalist Brothers of Italy party, said on Monday that Italian voters had given a clear mandate to the right to form the next government and called for unity to help confront the country’s many problems. Enrico Letta, the leader of Italy’s centre-left Democratic Party (PD), on Monday described Meloni’s victory as a “sad day for Italy and Europe“.
