Visit Visit our website One of the outstanding films made by Emily Benton Frith, “Give and Take With Mexico“ dates to 1949 and focuses on the international trade that takes place across the border. The film was produced and photographed by Emily Benton Frith, with narration by Don Mcnamara. Emily Benton Frith was an American documentary film producer and cinematographer who is known for her educational films for children. She founded the film company Frith Films in the 1930s and made over 60 films for pre-school and primary school children. In 1967, Frith sold the company and retired. The film opens with a shot of sunflowers (0:14). A map of the American continent, with the U.S., Canada, and Mexico shown, and the narrator describes that the U.S. only has two bordering neighbors (0:27). The narrator states that Mexico has sent workers over to help with the United States’s farms (0:52). They are called nationals, and help with among other things, railroad repair (1:00). Mount Hood is shown (1:07). Large camp for 500 nationals is shown (1:19). A worker, Antonio is shown working in a field (1:48). The film shows the workers singing (2:13). The film shows Molly Grant, an American girl (2:59). The film shows Antonio working on the irrigation ditches (3:13). The source of the water for the farm is the snow caps on Mount Hood (3:35). Antonio and his friend Felipe are in the orchards, clearing the small trenches called irrigating rails (4:18). The town of Hood River is shown (5:09). A sporting goods store in Hood River is shown (5:36). Antonio and Philipe prepare to go for a boat ride (6:08). They meet their friend Roberto (7:32). Mrs. Grant pulls up in a Dodge Luxury Liner (7:34). The film shows some of the men gathered together studying English (7:59). The film shows Antonio harvesting pears (8:40). Mexican flags fly in the plaza and a Mexican Methodist Church is shown (18:04). The film then shows the buildings that have been influenced by Mexican architecture (18:24). Antonio, Augustine, Enrique, and Lorenz say goodbye to the Grant family (20:01). The truck leaves for a larger camp, from these camps, the men get on a special train that goes to Mexico, the train is shown on the screen (20:25).
