When Egypt and Syria launched their surprise attack against Israel on 06 October 1973, their plan included helicopter commando raids deep behind Israeli lines on the Sinai Peninsula. The Israeli rear area was almost undefended by ground troops and Egyptian commandos could have easily disrupted the supply lines. F-4E Phantoms were the only weapons available which could prevent such an outcome. Shooting down helicopters wasn’t easy. Sun was setting, missiles were useless and Phantom pilots weren’t quite sure which gun attack setting to use.
