Watch: Teddy Bears [Children in History 2] (1992) - FULL EPISODE

David Wood and his childhood cuddly toy Fred the Ted take a trip to Merrythought in Ironbridge, Shropshire, looking at the manufacturing process of stuffed bears and meeting Mrs Taylor, who helps give Fred a new lease of life. We’re also taught the history of German lady Margarete Steiff, who is largely credited with the invention of teddies, and play David’s guess-the-bear song-game. See if you can get all three. This episode was originally broadcast on Tuesday, 22nd September, 1992, and I’m happy to say that all these years later Merrythought is still going strong, even getting the contract to produce the official teddies of the London 2012 Olympics. Grateful thanks to Ben for providing this recording - don’t forget to check out when you get the chance.
