Radio Free Budapest (Hungarian Revolution 1956)

[Click CC if captions aren’t working] Szabad Kossuth Rádió (Free Kossuth Radio) reiterates Imre Nagy’s radio announcement regarding the Soviet invasion that was a response to the Hungarian uprising. Magyar Rádió operating as Szabad Kossuth Rádió Budapest was heard in several countries operating ’underground’ via shortwave making the world aware of what was going on and also to plea for Western assistance. While the initial phase of this ’leaderless’ revolution was somewhat successful, toppling the Soviet-backed government, Western assistance never came and the revolution was ultimately crushed when Soviet armed forces entered the country.
