Allergic rhinitis (also known as Hay Fever) is a condition involving inflammation of the nasal mucosa after exposure to allergens. There are two types of allergic rhinitis, seasonal and perennial. The pathogenesis of allergic rhinitis involves elevation of immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels in response to exposure to an allergen, with IgE binding to mast cells and causing degranulation. In this lesson, we discuss the pathophysiology in more detail, along with risk factors, signs and symptoms, how it’s diagnosed and how it’s treated.
