Shorts and Skirts | Celine Sciamma’s TOMBOY reaction & commentary

Who chooses who you are: you or the world? Tomboy is a 2011 film by French director Celine Sciamma (Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Girlhood, Water Lilies). In it, a 10 year-old child in a new neighborhood tries to fit in with a group of kids under the moniker Mikael. But there is discord between their home life and social life as they keep this identity hidden from their family. The film is intensely minimal, delightful, and extremely, extremely painful. It will send you back to the warmest and coldest memories of your childhood - to the summer where everyone knew your name, to the fall where no one wanted to know you.
