Heavy Snowfalls in Africa. And this is not fake and not a joke
Reviews of weather events, natural disasters, astronomical phenomena and wildlife around the world
A severe snowstorm has swept across South Africa, blocking roads and damaging property, the local newspaper The Citizen reports.
According to the newspaper, the snow has formed in central parts of KwaZulu-Natal province, blocking the N3 highway, which connects Johannesburg with the east coast city of Durban.
The Times Live writes that all four lanes of the highway are blocked. Some drivers are abandoning their cars, which is why they have to be removed from the road so as not to interfere with snow removal.
In addition, the snowfall has also caused damage to people’s property. In the city of Ladysmith, a woman said that the roof of her neighbor’s house collapsed due to the weight of the snow.
In some areas, there is also no mobile phone coverage due to the snowfall. Several hundred households have experienced power outages due to broken power lines.
The KwaZulu-Natal provincial government said aid agencies had delivered warm blankets and water to people stranded on the highway.
Despite the harsh conditions, locals, some of whom were seeing snow for the first time in their lives, were taking a positive attitude to the snowfall. People were making snowmen, playing snowballs, chilling beer in the snow and having snow parties.
More snow could fall in the coming hours, according to South African Meteorological Service forecaster Luthando Masimini. An orange weather alert has also been issued for some parts of the country.
