Swimming Bears of Kamchatka

Here is a spectacular video that I filmed in Russia with Kamchatka’s most famous residents: the bears. Kamchatka bears are excellent swimmers, able to easily cross the bodies of water. Kurile lake lies within the crater of a huge volcano that long ago produced one of the greatest eruptions in the planet’s history. The lake is still circled by active vents and mineral rich ash from the regular eruptions has made its waters particularly fertile. Millions of salmon come to Kurile Lake from the Pacific Ocean to spawn in its fertile waters which will provide their young with abundant food. During summer Kurile Lake contains the densest assembly of bears to be found anywhere on Earth. All hungry for salmon. Early in the season though the fish is still strong and swift. When hunting seems to fail, and nothing seems to work when chasing the fish swimming fast in the streams one old bear knows that there is an easier meal to get and paddles out into the lake away from the shoals of newly arrived salmon where there is food that doesn’t need chasing. Some of the first fish to arrive have died and they can be easily collected from the bottom of the lake. Il lago Kurile si trova all’interno del cratere di un enorme vulcano che molto tempo fa produsse una delle più grandi eruzioni nella storia del pianeta. Il lago è ancora oggi circondato da bocche attive e la cenere ricca di minerali proveniente dalle eruzioni che si verificano regolarmente ha reso le sue acque particolarmente fertili. Milioni di salmoni arrivano al Lago Kurile dall’Oceano Pacifico per deporre le uova nelle sue fertili acque che forniranno ai loro piccoli cibo in abbondanza. In estate il Lago Kurile ospita la più densa concentrazione di orsi che si possa trovare sulla Terra. Tutti affamati di salmone. Ma all’inizio della stagione il pesce è ancora forte e veloce. Quando la caccia sembra fallire e nulla sembra funzionare mentre insegue i pesci che nuotano veloci nei torrenti, un vecchio orso sa che c’è un pasto più facile da ottenere e nuota nel lago lontano dai banchi di salmoni appena arrivati dove c’è cibo che non ha bisogno di essere inseguito. Alcuni dei primi pesci arrivati sono morti e possono essere facilmente raccolti dal fondo del lago. Location: Kurile Lake, Kamchatka, Russia August 2023.
