Joan of Arc was a young French peasant who led the French Army in the Hundred Years’ War against England, making Charles VII of Valois crowned King of France. Later it was captured by the Burgundians and given to the English. The clerics falsely condemned her for heresy and Duke John of Bedford burned her alive in Rouen, on May 30, 1431. She was beatified in 1909 by pope St Pius X, and canonized in 1920, by pope Benedict XV. That same year she was declared Patron Saint of France.
