Written by Roger Dove, photography by Dan Devito, narration by Bob Ellsworth, The all-weather Sea King program dated to 1957, when the Navy undertook an effort to replace the outdated S-58 (HSS-1). A landmark design, it was one of the first ASW rotorcraft to use turboshaft engines. The project was originally designated S-61 and the HSS-2 prototype (shown in the film) flew on 11 March 1959. The prototype was followed by seven pre-production aircraft (YHSS-2) which successfully completed service trials in 1960. The US Navy ordered the first ten S-61B/HSS-2 for delivery starting in September 1961. The helicopters were later redesignated SH-3A Sea King. Over 1300 were built; the U.S. Navy retired the last in 2006. We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment!
