On today’s EJC Exploration we go Exploring ABANDONED Kmart - Permanently Closed Kmart has closed its doors after nearly 25 years in Manhattan’s Astor Place location. It means that there are no Kmart’s in Manhattan now, although two stores in the Bronx are still open. The store was located in the old Wanamaker store on Broadway and Astor Place. The store was opened November 1996 as the second Kmart store in Manhattan. The first store was in the Penn Plaza adjacent to the Pennsylvania railroad station on 34th Street. That store was closed during the pandemic in early 2020. Members of the Kmart team were told just a few days before Transformco closed the store last Sunday according to East Village blog by EV Grieve. According to Chain Store Age about 18 Sears stores and 8 Kmart units will be closed by midyear. Transformco has bought Sears Holding Corp. and has been steadily closing stores nationwide.
