There are many managed places like this in China, called urban villages. They are traditional villages that remain in urban areas. It’s a unique phenomenon that has emerged during the process of urbanization in mainland China. In the 30 years since the reform and opening up in 1978, some economically developed areas, such as the Pearl River Delta and some provincial capitals, have seen a rapid expansion of their cities.
