Mahou Tsukai Tai! is About Being an Otaku

This video is part of my new Patreon series, suggest a work, and I’ll make a short video on what I thought the most interesting thing about it is. Mahou Tsukai Tai! (Magic User’s Club) was great OVA full of lovable characters, fluid animation, creative visuals and a lot of imagination. It also reminded me a lot of the Otaku experience, in particular the way the Magic User’s Club are looked down upon by the manga club and society writ large. The magic seemed like an obvious stand it for Otaku media, and the director, Junichi Sato, often talks about realism in his works, and imbuing his stories with real world experiences. Also the girls are really cute goddamn. Sources: Interview with Sato Junichi: “Otaku and the Struggle for Imagination in Japan“ by Patrick Galbraith (read this book its beast mode) F
