Overview Once a niche automaker catering exclusively to sports car buyers, Porsche has reinvented itself over the past few decades by practically pioneering the performance SUV niche. The 2024 Macan GTS is a perfect example of how Porsche has applied its sports car formula to a high-riding hatchback crossover. A twin-turbo V-6 is standard and makes 434 horsepower; it comes with all-wheel drive and hits 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds. That straight-line speed nicely complements the SUV’s agile handling. The Macan GTS is so well-balanced on a twisty road that you forget you’re driving an SUV by the time you’re exiting the first corner. Consider us charmed. There are downsides though: The Macan GTS’s swoopy roofline cuts into rear-seat headroom and rivals such as the BMW X3 M and the Jaguar F-Pace SVR haul more cargo. Still, the Macan GTS is unmatched when it comes to driver satisfaction. What’s New for 2024? The Macan GTS sees one singular change for 2024: A wireless smartphone charging pad is now standard. Otherwise, the top Macan is as awesome as it was last year. Pricing and Which One to Buy Macan GTS: $88,450 The Macan GTS comes well-equipped with performance goodies right out of the gate, but we think the SUV’s luxury is a bit lacking. So, we’d order the Premium Plus package, which includes a panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated 14-way adjustable front seats, and a 12-speaker Bose stereo system. Engine, Transmission, and Performance Although the base Macan (reviewed separately) is available with a turbocharged four-cylinder, going with the performance-oriented GTS unlocks a much more powerful twin-turbo V-6. The engine makes 434 horsepower, which helped the Macan GTS deliver an impressive 60-mph time at our test track. Several rivals offer even more power, including the 505-hp Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio and the 503-hp BMW X3 M Competition. Despite the disadvantage in power, though, the Macan GTS feels like the more accomplished option thanks to its crisper handling and more communicative helm. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG The 2024 Macan GTS carries EPA fuel-economy estimates of 17 mpg city and 22 mpg highway. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo While entry-level Macans can be a bit too spartan for their price, the GTS model comes with more niceties such as leather upholstery, aluminum trim, and heated front seats. Still, those seeking an SUV with a plusher cabin may find the Genesis GV70 more appealing. The Macan GTS aims for maximum fun, with well-placed controls, good outward visibility, and a comfortable driving position. Its cargo hold isn’t as large as some of its rivals, but when has buying a Porsche ever been a rational choice?
