Select a healthy, mature branch that is at least 6 inches long and has several leaves. Make a cut. About 1/3 of the way down the branch, make a ring cut through the bark, about 1/4 inch deep. Be careful not to cut all the way through the wood. Scrape the cambium. Use a sharp knife to scrape away the cambium layer, the thin green layer of tissue between the bark and the wood, for about 1 inch above and below the ring cut. Apply aloe vera gel. Apply aloe vera gel to the exposed cambium layer. Wrap the branch in tissue paper. Moisten a ball of tissue paper with water and wrap it around the exposed cambium layer. Secure the tissue paper in place with plastic wrap or foil. Give water once a week the tissue paper. If the temperature is high, water twice a week. Keep the tissue paper moist by watering it. Check for roots. After a month, check the tissue paper for roots. When the roots are at least 2 to 3 inch long, you can cut the branch below the roots and pot up the new plant. Here are some additional tips for air layering fig trees: Do air layering in the spring or early summer, when the plant is actively growing. Choose a branch that is in partial shade. Make sure the tissue paper stays moist, but not soggy. Be patient. It can take several weeks for roots to form. Once the new plant has rooted, you can remove the plastic wrap or foil and carefully remove the tissue paper. Pot up the new plant in a well-draining potting mix and water it well. Place the plant in a warm, sunny spot and keep it well-watered. With proper care, your new fig tree should start producing fruit within a few years.
