Illinois Central 1995 The Final Era, EMD GP38-2, GP40, SD20, SD40-2, SW14, GP10, GP11! The Illinois Central Railroad, known historically as the Mainline of Mid-America, was in its final years before being absorbed into Canadian National in 1999. On the Chicago District in northern Illinois, the IC mainline paralleled its former electrified Suburban Service, since operated by Chicago’s commuter rail authority, Metra. The suburban Highliner electric motors were built for IC, later acquired by the commuter agency for Metra Electric service. Classic IC freight diesels include EMD GP38-2, GP40, SD20, SD40-2, SW14, and IC rebuilt GP10 and GP11 units.
