Anti-lockdown protesters take to the streets of Berlin on Wednesday, April 21. The demonstrators are expected to be met by counter-protests.
The protest calls come as the Bundestag is set to vote on a new Infection Protection Act, which enables the government to take powers from the regions in the fight against the pandemic by introducing nationwide rules.
Germany is currently facing a third wave of coronavirus infections, with lockdown being in place at least until the second half of April in a bid to curb community spread of COVID-19. According to the latest figures compiled by the Robert Koch Institute, Germany has seen over 3 million confirmed cases of the coronavirus, and over 80,000 COVID-19-related deaths.
