Creating a loop in the middle of a rope can be very handy when climbing and you need to quick attach something or someone. But it can also be used to create footholds or hand holds in a rope. Other purposes are creating a small loop when hanging decorations. We selected three different knots that can be tied on a bight and that are relatively easy. ** The Alpine Butterfly Knot ** This is a nice looking simple knot that can be tied quickly in the middle of a rope without having access to the ends of the rope. The Alpine Butterfly loop can be used to unload a damaged section of a climbing line but the Alpine Butterfly loop can also be used to create an mid-line attachment point for a climber. Because the Alpine Butterfly knot is safe to climb on. Other purposes for the the Alpine Butterfly knot are creating support loops when hanging decorations or create attachment points when make a rope guard rail. The Alpine Butterfly knot might be a bit difficult to untie after it has been heavily loaded. ** The Figure Eight on a bight ** This is a variation of the well know Figure Eight knot but then tied on a bight. By tying the Figure Eight knot on a bight you don’t need access to the end of the rope. The Figure Eight knot on a bight is also safe to climb on. It can be used to create footholds or handholds in a line or it can be used to attach a climber. The Figure Eight knot on a bight might be a bit difficult to untie after it has been heavily (shock) loaded. ** The Bowline on a bight ** The Bowline on a bight is the mid-line variant of the famous Bowline knot. The Bowline on a bight is probably the most difficult of the three ways to tie a loop in the middle of a rope series but it has a big advantage. The Bowline on a bight is much easier to untie after being heavily loaded then the Figure Eight on a bight and the Alpine Butterfly knot. It can be used for towing and hanging a sorts of heavy objects on a line. When using the Bowline on a bight make sure to use both loops else resizing or slipping might occur. Sometimes the Bowline on a bight is used to create an emergency bosun chair. The is a simple very uncomfortable harness that can be used to lower a person.
