Bird on the wire /La Rossignoll/The Tuneful Nightingale - Joel Frederiksen / Ensemble Phoenix Munich

Ensemble Phoenix Munich/Joel Frederiksen perform live at the University of Calgary, Rozsa Centre, Canada, October 28, 2023 / Calgary Pro Musica, Horizon Series. This song is from the CD, “A DAY WITH SUZANNE - A TRIBUTE TO LEONARD COHEN WITH FRENCH RENAISSANCE CHANSON“ (Spiegel Bestseller Top 10; Opus Klassik Award Nominee). SONY/Deutsche Harmonia Mundi (January 2023): For Cohen’s iconic song, “Bird on the Wire“, I found two instrumental pieces from England imitating the nightingale. We begin with the anonymous lute duet, “La Rossignol“, from Jane Pickering’s lute book (c. 1616), where the nightingale sings in melodious, sometimes repeated tones. In the middle of Cohen’s piece, “The Tuneful Nightingale“, from John Playford’s “The Dancing Master” (1718), is heard. JOEL FREDERIKSEN (ARRANGEMENTS/BEARBEITUNGEN) voice, lute, artistic direction / Gesang, Laute, künstlerische Leitung EMMA-LISA ROUX lute, voice / Laute, Gesang GIOVANNA BAVIERA viola da gamba / Viola da Gamba DOMEN MARINČIČ viola da gamba / Viola da Gamba Special Thanks to Dean O’Brien and Calgary Pro Musica for the invitation! We performed “Requiem for a Pink Moon“ for their first “Horizon Series“ 10 years ago. So nice to be back! Thank you also to the Goethe Institute for their generous support! They helped make this concert possible.
