This area, characterized by late Renaissance to early Baroque architecture, includes significant constructions like the Plaza Mayor, which was laid out in 1619 and used for events such as bullfights and coronations. The district showcases the economic growth and architectural developments of Spain’s Golden Age. Today’s walking tour starts at the Royal Palace. We’ll walk through Oriente Square and up and down the streets of the Opera neighborhood. During our tour, we’ll see the Royal Theater, Main Square—with a special exhibit, Santo Domingo Square, Puerta del Sol, and several smaller squares throughout the area.
