Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas reunite to premiere new Spanish comedy at Tribeca

I was shooting in ’Philadelphia’ at that time, but I was living in New York and she was just coming to America just to see if there was something for her here. She discovered that it was a lot for her here and possibility of working with her in this movie after so many years and doing it in our mother language, in Spanish and in a comedy and a comedy that is talking actually about show business—probably the worst side of show business—has been a lot of fun.“ 3. You know, the work that she did here in America is more serious. But she was always a fantastic comedy actress. You know, she can say whatever she thinks at all times, whatever she feels, because she does not care what anybody thinks about her. And that gives her a lot of freedom. SOUNDBITE (English) Penelope Cruz, actor: “But I think it’s very clever the way they wrote it, because the character are not clichés because they could have done with this woman, okay, she’s great and she’s a bad director. But she’s talented and she’s smart, but she’s too full of herself. And her problem is that she doesn’t listen to anyone, so she will stop learning.  So, I don’t know. Various of Cruz and Banderas and film creators posing for photos STORYLINE: PENELOPE CRUZ SAYS IT WAS “ABOUT TIME“ SHE DID A FILM WITH ANTONIO BANDERAS Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas reunite for their latest film, “Official Competition.“ The duo premiered the comedy, which is in their native Spanish language, Tuesday (14 JUNE 2022) at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York. Cruz said while they may have been in the same films before, they have never really worked together. “We did a little scene with (Pedro) Almodóvar (director) in a movie called ’I’m Too Excited’. Then we did ’Pain and Glory’, but also no scenes together. And it’s incredible because we know each other for 30 years,“ Cruz told the Associated Press on the red carpet ahead of the films New York screening. “So, it was about time that somebody would put us together and it felt like we’ve done ten movies together before.“ Banderas says Cruz is “fantastic“ and applauded her going back to comedy. The Tribeca Film Festival runs through June 19. “Official Competition“ opens in the US on June 17.
